Shadwell History Society (SHS)

Welcome to the Shadwell History Society

Many people who live in Shadwell village and its surrounding areas are interested in the history of the area. In 1978 a book entitled ‘Shadwell and Its People’ was researched and published by the local Women’s Institute. The book put together many interesting facts, stories and photographs about Shadwell and is still on many people’s shelves, as well as in Shadwell Library.

The newly formed Shadwell History Society is now hoping to build on the excellent achievements of all the people who have studied and contributed to the history of Shadwell in the past.

The Society will be formally launched at the Shadwell Centenary Celebration event on the 10th November 2012.

Aims of the Shadwell History Society

The aims of the SHS are:

  • to promote an interest in the history and heritage of the local area
  • to build up an archive of historical resources, including maps, photographs, documents, books
  • to research local history and publish and disseminate the results of research

Current activities

The group is currently engaged in a number of projects, including the following:

  • Work is taking place on recording the memories of people who were born in Shadwell, grew up in the village or have lived in Shadwell for many years. Eventually a booklet will be produced from these stories, accompanied by photographs.
  • We have recently accessed the Parish Council records from the 1890’s and early 1900’s before Shadwell became part of Leeds, and these offer very interesting reading.
  • We are developing an archive of historical resources, including old maps, photographs and memorabilia, and eventually we would like this archive to be based in Shadwell’s Independent Library. Shadwell Primary School has shared with us resources that they have collected in the past.
  • There is also work taking place looking at the War Memorial at St Paul’s Church, and identifying the stories of those that were killed from this area in the two World Wars. The Parish Council is applying for funding to renovate the Memorial to its original state.

We have lots of other ideas for future initiatives, including resurrecting the historical walks around the area that have taken place in the past, displays in the library, public lectures and talks on interesting historical aspects of Shadwell, a book on old photographs, looking at the history of the Women’s Institute and the Yorkshire Country Women’s Association.

Do you want to be involved?

We would like to hear from you if you want to be involved in the steering group, would like to attend events, have memories to share or would like to be on our mailing list.

If you have archive material such as old newspaper cuttings, photographs, letters, bills, memorabilia or the like then please let us know – it is all relevant to the history of Shadwell.
