About Shadwell

Stone cottages on Hobberley Lane

Shadwell Village is on the outskirts of Leeds, about 7 miles from the City Centre. There is a bus into town, via Moortown Corner, or, for those a bit more mobile, a walk up to the A58 will get you onto the bus to Wetherby.

Shadwell is a very busy and dynamic village with lots of activities and societies. This helps retain our village and rural atmosphere despite the close proximity to the large city of Leeds. In fact, we are lucky to enjoy the best of both worlds – green fields, a village environment and all the facilities of Leeds with its theatres, bars, restaurants, cinemas and newly completed arena only about 20 minutes’ drive away.

Within Shadwell itself, we have a pub, The Red Lion, serving good traditional pub food, holding quiz nights twice a week, music and jazz evenings and special events and charity evenings.

We are most fortunate to have retained our Post Office and General Store and this is a hub for the local community. We also have a dress shop, hairdressers, beauticians and dry cleaners.

Shadwell Primary School has been classed as Outstanding by Ofsted and this is generally oversubscribed. We have nursery and pre-school facilities within the Village. Secondary education is provided by many different schools, most served by school buses.

We are very well served with meeting places – the Village Hall, the Recreational Centre, the Scout Hut and the Independent Library are all available for hire for meetings and events both large and small.

Both St Pauls Church of England Church and the Methodist Church are situated within the village.

The village has a range of sports clubs – Shadwell Cricket Club, Shadwell Tennis Club, Shadwell Football Club. Being on the edge of the countryside, cycling routes are numerous. A good network of Public Footpaths links Shadwell to Roundhay Park and nearby villages, such as Thorner.

As can be expected in a Village, societies and organisations abound – for example, Yorkshire Countrywomens Association, Horticultural Society, Ladies Monday Club, Bridge Club, PROBUS, Shadwell in Bloom, Local History Society.

We hope you will agree that Shadwell has something to offer everyone!
